Alcohol, marijuana and nicotine are the leading substances abused by teens in the United States followed by prescription and over the counter drugs. Teen substance use has changed significantly in recent years however, with vaping and easily accessible substances sold in gas stations becoming more common among adolescents. Many teens view vaping as less harmful than traditional cigarettes, leading to increased use of nicotine and THC vape products. In addition, products such as Nitrous oxide, nicotine pouches (such as ZYN), energy supplements and other mood altering substances sold in convenience stores and gas stations are often marketed in ways that appeal to young people, despite potential health and safety risks. These trends have created new challenges for parents, schools, and communities because many of these products are easy to obtain, difficult to regulate, and can negatively affect teen brain development, mental health, behavior and academic performances.
